Welcome to the SABO Network

The SABO network was implemented in the Fall of 2004 as a method for Graduate students in EECN to connect their personal computers to the campus network.

Why is it called SABO?

SABO stands for System Administration By Owner. This means that the EECN support staff will provide no assistance in the maintenance of SABO machines.

How is the SABO Network configured?

The SABO network service is similar to any other ISP connection. Registered machines will be provided DHCP information. The owner of the machine is responsible for placing the machine on the network.

What services can be reached from SABO?

The SABO network exists on a different subnet from the rest of the campus network. This is done for segmenting the machines supported by EECN and those that are not.

SABO machines can reach:

  • Email servers (POP/IMAP/SMTP)
  • EECN Networked Printers (lpr services)
  • Web servers
  • Other network protocols
SABO machines cannot reach:
  • File service (network drives)

How to sign-up for SABO service

You can request a SABO connection by sending email to

Please include the following:

  • Building and Room Number
  • Operating System and Computer Type
    (i.e. Windows XP, Laptop)
  • NIC Hardware Address of Machine (Physical Address)
Typically this is found on Windows XP boxes by "ipconfig /all"
Please note that only ONE network connection is provided per graduate student. If your advisor provides a machine, the graduate student can pay for the SABO connection if they also want a personal machine in their office.
