East Engineering Computing Network (EECN) changes to graduate office network connectivity.

Over the Spring semester of 2007, East Engineering Computing Network (EECN) will be moving towards the goal of having a new method of providing graduate office network connectivity. EECN will be moving to the following model.

Graduate student office connectivity model

  • MTU Wireless will be made available to all grad office areas. EECN will work with departments to provide wireless access to most of the common areas used by graduate students and researchers.
  • A VPN server will provide access to networked CIFS/SMB/Windows drives (home directory and research shares).
  • Researchers can provide a machine to their gradstudents, but they will be responsibile for the costs of the monthly networking. This machine can be administered by EECN and have any applicable licensed software installed as long as it does not vilolate the license agreement.
  • Researchers that want to use SABO for their graduate students will be responsible for the costs of the monthly networking.
  • The Sunrays will be end of lived by July 1, 2007 due to application support under Solaris for graduate student needs. The future of Solaris as a supported desktop environment will be discussed by the EECN Computer Committee.

Implementation schedule:

April 2, 2007 Start deployment of wireless in DOW.
April 2, 2007 Start deployment of wireless in Dillman.
April 2, 2007 Start deployment of wireless in MSE.
April 23, 2007 Configure new server for VPN service.
April 30, 2007 Work with a few graduate student volunteers to test VPN and drive mounting
May 14, 2007 Finish wireless deployment in all buildings
May 21, 2007 Start working with grad students to transition from SABO to MTU wireless.
June 4, 2007 Finish SABO transition to MTU Wireless.

Background

The reasons for these changes are based on the constant request for wireless, a survey resulting in 70% positive support for wireless (some of the negatives were from lack of wireless on desktop/laptop), and costs associated with grad office network moves. There will be some saving in SABO costs that will be used to help fund the VPN server to allow mounting of home directories and other (research) shares to graduate students machines.

Questions or concerns can be raised with the Director of EECN or your departments representative to the EECN Computer Committee.
